Over The Limit 2012 Predictions

First of all, I want to apologise to anybody reading. At the end of the last set of predictions, I said I was working on an article looking at the main event scene in the WWE, but because of exams (and the World Heavyweight Championship match tonight) it has been put on hold, possibly permanently.

Anyways, there’s a PPV tonight, with 5 announced matches…

WWE Tag Team Championship Match – Dolph Ziggler & Jack Swagger vs Kofi Kingston & R-Truth (C)

I’m gonna say it – this match could steal the show. Unfortunately, it won’t, because they will probably only get 7 or 8 minutes. All four men have good to great chemistry (see the Dolph vs Kofi series), you have the bumping ability of Ziggler, as well as his and Kofi’s athleticism, Swagger’s pure wrestling ethos, throw in how entertaining Truth can be on his day and the fact that no-one expects this to be epic and it has the potential to be just that. The problem with this is Ziggler shouldn’t be in this match. He should be higher up the card – how about as one of Laurinaitis’ cronies? He already helped Dolph back in January against CM Punk for the WWE Title, and a feud with John Cena now could catapult him to the next level – just ask Edge. If they were going to put the titles on team Swiggler, they should have beaten Air Boom.

Predicton: Winners and still Tag Champs, Kofi Kingston and R-Truth

WWE Divas Title Match – Beth Phoenix vs Layla (C)

Does anyone care anymore? I reckon Beth will win the title eventually, but they’ll draw it out so Beth-Kharma can happen at a big event like Summerslam.

Prediction: Winner and still Divas Champion, Layla

World Heavyweight Championship Match – Alberto Del Rio vs Chris Jericho vs Randy Orton vs Sheamus (C)

Again, given time, this could and should be a good match. The interaction between (ironically) the two faces is what really makes this match exciting for me. It could go either way between Sheamus and Orton, and based on Raw and Smackdown this is a feud that could continue past the PPV. For me though, the build for Alberto Del Rio has hurt the match. He has been away doing promotional work and as such hasn’t been on television as much as they would like – which is probably the only reason the match was changed in the first place, considering it was originally Del Rio’s opportunity that he had won by beating Sheamus by DQ on Smackdown. Jericho seems like a spare part, possibly owing to the fact he will be leaving again soon. As I said before, I think it’s most likely a toss-up between Orton and Sheamus. But if they want to establish Sheamus as a dominant champion, he needs to keep the title for a while longer yet.

Prediction: Winner and still World Heavyweight Champion, Sheamus

WWE Championship Match – Daniel Bryan vs CM Punk (C)

When I said that the tag team match could steal the show, it was only ever going to steal it from this one. The reason I don’t think this will steal the show is because I think practically everyone expects this to be a great wrestling match. It will undoubtedly be the match of the night, as well as a possible match of the year contender. Yet even with as simple of a story as the amount of history these two have shared, the WWE creative team still manages to succeed in missing a huge trick with this match. There is very little emotional involvement – for a big storyline in the future then I am all for it, but I highly doubt that will be the end goal. And if Bryan doesn’t win this, I fear for his future. He has done very well to cement himself in the main event of Smackdown since cashing in his Money In The Bank briefcase, but that will all go to waste if he is taken out of the title picture and put into a long-term rivalry with AJ. Unfortunately, this is the WWE we’re talking about, and that’s exactly what I see happening.

Prediction: Winner and still WWE Champion, CM Punk

John Cena vs John Laurinaitis

What should be one of, if not the, biggest angle of the year features one of the most predictable matches of the year. The only thing I don’t know about this match, is if Vince realises everyone knows, and changes the ending. If he does change it, it will be very interesting to see what does happen. Because I feel like I know what will happen, I don’t have much to say about it. But at the same time I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who doesn’t want to know. What I will say is, for those marks, I think they’re in for a big surprise.

Prediction: Winner and still employed by the WWE, John Laurinaitis

While I don’t think this event has had a great build-up, from a wrestling standpoint this could be great. I’m recording this (it’s free in the UK (see, there are some perks to living in the UK (yeah, well, you wouldn’t know most of the time))) and I am planning on watching it on Tuesday, when I might put up some thoughts on Over The Limit and Raw. It’ll depend how thoughtful I am.

I also hinted at the end of the Extreme Rules predictions that we will be getting a new writer soon. We will, there are just some logistics to sort out. Though at this rate he’ll have had more hype than Brodus Clay…
