2017 Spotlight: October – December

Wrestling is an incredibly dynamic industry where everything can change in a matter of days – if not hours – and 2017 has really typified that in WWE. From wholesale roster changes, to walk outs and injuries, you can never predict what’s going to happen next, not that I won’t keep trying. As the year draws to a close, what better opportunity than to look back and reflect on the memorable moments WWE gave us in 2017?

This is the final part of my 2017 Spotlights, you can find the first three below:

January – March

April – May

June – September

October

2nd-16th October – Sierra. Hotel. India. Echo. Lima. Delta.

The reunion of Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose naturally invoked memories of The Shield, and got the fans wondering if the third piece of the puzzle would come together. As it turned out, three and a half years after Rollins slammed a chair into Roman Reigns’ back, The Shield returned as a united force. Battling against their common enemies of The Miz, The Bar and Braun Strowman, it was fantastic to see the ever-popular trio working together once again.

Extreme Rules – Fatal-5-Way

The thing about multi-matches is they can be so chaotic that there isn’t a cohesive story to the match. But at the same time, put enough talent in there, and it can be all action and constant entertainment. The latter scenario certainly applied to the Extreme Rules main event between Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, Bray Wyatt, Finn Balor and Samoa Joe in a match to decide Brock Lesnar’s next challenger. With five of the top guys on the brand in one match there were always going to be fireworks, and use of chairs, stairs, a broken barricade and a broken announce table delivered in that regard. In the end, it was Samoa Joe who came away with the win, as he turned his attention to the Beast Incarnate.

NXT TakeOver: Orlando – The Authors of Pain eliminate the competition

2017 has seen a real resurgence of a tag team division in NXT. American Alpha, The Revival and DIY had been having great feature matches, but there was no real depth to the divisions. There is now. And on Wrestlemania weekend, once again the tag team stars shone bright. The Authors of Pain, The Revival and DIY put on one hell of a match that went for 20 minutes before the first elimination. They told a wonderful story of DIY and The Revival, bitter rivals in 2016, needing to team up to take out the defending champions. This may have been WWE’s match of the weekend, which was no mean feat.

9th January – Chris Jericho defeats Roman Reigns for the United States Championship

What’s that? A year ago Roman Reigns was holding a mid-card championship that was essentially filling time until something bigger was in store for him come Wrestlemania season? Sounds familiar somehow. What might be more difficult to remember is that the best friend pairing of Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho was in full flow as one of the regular highlights of Raw. While this match in itself wasn’t entirely memorable in amongst seemingly hundreds of matches between Reigns, Jericho and Owens, Y2J’s championship win made him a WWE Grand Slam champion, so if only for the history books it’s definitely worth noting.

2016 So Far…

We have reached the half way point of the year, so what better time to take a look back at WWE’s 2016 so far?

Here’s the thing. Here is the reason I’m writing this article – I don’t think most people would say it’s been a great year. Week to week reviews that I’ve seen online say that the shows have been average. There’s always something to complain about, even amongst the highlights.

One of the main thoughts I had when I wrote about how the Attitude Era wasn’t that great was that despite us now classing moments as legendary, they didn’t feel that massive at the time. I say at the time, I watched old Raws on the Network, so I already knew of the moments themselves, but not always when they were going to happen.

But when I look back at 2016 so far, there are so many things I can point to and say “that was fantastic”. Continue reading

News In Review: April 2014

Sorry for the radio silence guys, it’s been a busy month personally. And it’s coincided with quite a dramatic lack of news in the post-Mania wrestling world. Considering how eagerly everybody was clutching to any scrap of any information at the start of the month, it’s one hell of a drop off.

But that doesn’t mean that nothing happened at all – this was Wrestlemania month after all – so this is your monthly news in review column for the month of April 2014! If you haven’t seen this format before, it’s pretty simple to pick up. I divide the biggest news stories of the month into three categories: Inside The Ring, for things that we see in the WWE on our screens every week; Outside The Ring for the backstage gossip that isn’t really developed on TV; and finally In The Industry for any non-WWE related news stories. Let’s get to it! Continue reading

News in Review – March 2014

It’s the end of the month, so it’s about that time where I look back at the biggest stories in the world of wrestling during March. Hopefully you’re getting to grips with the format by now, but in case you haven’t seen this column before, I use three categories – “Inside The Ring” for what we see from the WWE on TV each week, “Outside The Ring”, for the backstage happenings/rumours in the WWE, and “In The Industry”, for everything else non-WWE related.

This month it very much felt like everything we saw on TV from the WWE was Wrestlemania focused – as you would expect – so there’s not actually that much in that category this time around. And I should probably also say that this was put together before the go-home Raw, since I’m in the UK and that Raw is in April for us Brits. But let’s get right into it! Continue reading

News In Review: February 2014

It’s a new month again, and that can only mean one thing here at the Plebs of Wrestling – a nice, comprehensive round up of the biggest news stories from the last month! This feature debuted last month, and I’m keeping the same three categories to sort all the news items into Inside the Ring, Outside the Ring, and In the Industry. I think they’re all pretty self-explanatory, but if not you’ll get the idea soon enough. Anyway, by it’s very nature this is quite a big article, so let’s not waste any more time and get right into it! Continue reading

January 2014 News: Month in Review

So this is the first of what will hopefully become a regular feature here. I am going to round up the biggest news stories/moments of the month, and put them all into a list. It will let me cover stories that I wouldn’t otherwise get round to covering, and it may be something to look back on with a bit of nostalgia. I’m going to post this on either the last day of the month, or the first day of the next, so that’s more regular content from the off!

I’ve split things up into three categories: Inside The Ring, Outside The Ring, and In The Industry. The first is what we see on WWE TV, the second covers behind the scenes in the WWE, and the last is anything outside of the WWE basically, in the wrestling industry. This will probably be quite a long article, so let’s get to it!
