2017 Spotlight: January-March

Wrestling is an incredibly dynamic industry where everything can change in a matter of days – if not hours – and 2017 has really typified that in WWE. From wholesale roster changes, to walk outs and injuries, you can never predict what’s going to happen next, not that I won’t keep trying. As the year draws to a close, what better opportunity than to look back and reflect on the memorable moments WWE gave us in 2017?

9th January – Chris Jericho defeats Roman Reigns for the United States Championship

What’s that? A year ago Roman Reigns was holding a mid-card championship that was essentially filling time until something bigger was in store for him come Wrestlemania season? Sounds familiar somehow. What might be more difficult to remember is that the best friend pairing of Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho was in full flow as one of the regular highlights of Raw. While this match in itself wasn’t entirely memorable in amongst seemingly hundreds of matches between Reigns, Jericho and Owens, Y2J’s championship win made him a WWE Grand Slam champion, so if only for the history books it’s definitely worth noting.

Wrestlemania 33 Spotlight: Kevin Owens vs Chris Jericho

It’s day four of my Wrestlemania previews, which means we’re past the halfway stage! We’re just three days away from wrestling’s biggest annual event, so let’s get cracking!

It’s the match that has had the longest regular build, features one of the all-time greats, and has the potential to absolutely steal the show. It’s the United States Championship match between the reigning champion, the g.o.a.t, Chris Jericho, and the prizefighter himself, Kevin Owens.

This is a storyline that goes all the way back to the weeks before SummerSlam. Chris Jericho had been having his issues with Enzo Amore, and of course with Big Cass in his corner Big Chris was outnumbered. So, apparently quite randomly at the time, Kevin Owens – fresh off a rivalry with his former best friend Sami Zayn – told Jericho that he had his back.

The two Canadians formed a formidable partnership that would bring both success

2017 Royal Rumble Spotlight: Royal Rumble Match

The Road to Wrestlemania begins… tonight. It’s the Royal Rumble, where 30 men battle to throw each other over an obstacle. There is a rumoured Wrestlemania card out there online right now, but excitingly nobody seems to be sure where the titles will be. So the question on everyone’s lips tonight is, who will stand victorious having won the Royal Rumble match? That’s what I’m focusing on here by picking the Rumble match itself for my PPV Spotlight. And if you ask me…

I have absolutely no earthly idea.

This is the most open Royal Rumble… possibly ever. You actually need two hands to count the potential winners in 2017, instead of there just being two options. Let’s go through the apparent contenders. Continue reading

WWE Survivor Series 2016 PPV Spotlight: Men’s 5-On-5 Elimination Match

Ahh Survivor Series. Raw vs Smackdown, as it has essentially been branded. I have to admit, when I first heard about the concept I wasn’t too keen, as I thought it was coming too soon. I didn’t think we had enough reason to care about seeing everyone in the same ring just a matter of months after they were split up.

But dammit they’ve done it, and I’m excited.

This PPV Spotlight is going to focus on the men’s 5-on-5 elimination match. Theoretically the ten top guys in the entire company, going head to head in the battle for brand supremacy. Now obviously, it never quite works out that way because of booking or injuries (or TV-hosting), but we still have an intriguing match-up with some mouth-watering potential clashes.

10 Rivalries for the Brand Extension 2.0

The main focus for me right now in wrestling – as I’m sure is also true of millions of WWE fans around the world – is the upcoming draft. In roughly two weeks, the roster will be split, characters will be separated. And as yet, nobody knows who will go where. We don’t even know for sure what the situations with the Championship belts are. But with uncertainty comes speculation, and with speculation comes dreams. So I’ve put together 10 feuds that I would love to see happen – and think we should see happen – in the months after July 19th. Continue reading

Analysing the MitB Ladder Match 2016

For years since I started this blog, I have analysed the Money In The Bank ladder matches. I have gone through each competitor and labelled their chances of winning, using the tags none, unlikely, possible, dark horse and favourite. I don’t think I’m going to tag everyone in the same way this year, but I’m still going to take each man in the match and assess their chances individually. What am I waiting for, let’s get to it! Smackdown: A Retrospective (Part 1)

It’s been a big year for Smackdown. It celebrated its 15th Anniversary in October, and it has fairly recently been announced that Smackdown will be moving back to Thursdays next year, which should give it some impetus that it’s currently lacking. But when you think about it, some of the more iconic moments in WWE history happened on the blue brand. Then they went through the brand extension, where Smackdown was consistently the better wrestling show. It has been under the leadership of Vince McMahon, Stephanie McMahon, Paul Heyman (all on and off screen), as well as the likes of Vickie Guerrero, Teddy Long, Kurt Angle, John Laurinaitis and even Zack Ryder. It has gone from The Rock’s show, to the better brand, only to fall into irrelevancy in recent years. I’m going to take a look back at some of the best moments over the last 15 years, and then look at why nobody cares about it anymore.

This article is part 1/3. Here I’m going to look at some of the best matches and rivalries to race the blue brand. This is by no means an exhaustive list, just some of the most iconic and memorable things we have seen on Smackdown. Continue reading

Thoughts of a Pleb: Raw1000, CM Punk and more!

I haven’t written anything about the recent momentous Raw until now because I was deliberately holding off until I saw this week’s Raw to put it into perspective and see how certain story lines progressed. I do have some thoughts on the event, as seen below… Continue reading
